India and South Africa Tuesday decided to cooperate on election administration, management and reforms.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on this by India's Chief Election Commissioner[1] S.Y. Quraishi and South Africa's Electoral Commission Chairperson Brigalia Bam. Election Commissioners V.S. Sampath and H.S. Brahma were also present on the occasion.
Both are to promote and implement educational research and training programmes in this area.The agreement covers exchange of knowledge/experience in the electoral process, exchange of material and expertise, training of personnel, production and dissemination of materials, voting technology and conducting voters’ education and awareness programmes.
The Election Commission of India has so far signed eleven MoUs with Election Management Bodies across the world including Brazil, Russia Indonesia, Bhutan and Nepal.

The Commission celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2001. Originally the commission had only a Chief Election Commissioner. It currently consists of Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners, it had only the Chief Election Commissioner before 1989. The concept of multi-member Commission has been in operation since 1993, with decision making power by majority vote.
